chinesischer Gelehrter und sozialpolitischer Reformer, * Nanhai (bei Kanton) 19. 3. 1858, ✝ Tsingtau 31. 3. 1927; bemühte sich im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert um eine Erneuerung Chinas, das nach dem japanischen Vorbild der »Meijireform« in eine konstitutionelle Monarchie umgewandelt werden sollte. Er fand Unterstützung durch den jungen Kaiser Dezong (auch Guangxu genannt; 1875-1908), in dessen Auftrag er die »Reform der 100 Tage« (11. 6.-20. 9. 1898) einleitete; musste nach ihrer Unterdrückung durch die Kaiserinwitwe Cixi emigrieren (Kaiser Dezong wurde bis zu seinem Tod gefangen gehalten). Kang Youwei verfasste die viel beachtete Utopie »Das Buch von der Großen Gemeinschaft« (Datongshu).
